Yesterday, Pope Benedict XVI opened the Synod of Bishops for the Middle East. He gave an address in which he said that a vigorous and apostolic Church in that region must combat the “false gods” such as exploitative capitalism, terrorism, drug abuse, and attacks on the institution of marriage. In speaking of capitalism, the Pope made it clear that he intended to denounce the approach that manipulates economic systems so that “they are no longer things of man but have become an anonymous power that man serves.”
Paying Tribute to Mother Angelica

An estimated two thousand Catholics traveled to Canton, Ohio, this past weekend to pay tribute to 87-year-old Mother Angelica in her hometown in occasion of its annual Family Celebration. Bishop George Murry of Youngstown offered Mass, and the city’s mayor formally designated part of a Canton street as the Mother Angelica Memorial Corridor. The EWTN foundress was unable to attend the event because of ill health.
Polish Franciscan remembers St. Maximilian Kolbe

Father Lucjan Krolikowski is a 91-year-old Polish Franciscan priest who remains active in ministry in Massachusetts. He has recounted his days as a seminarian under St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe. Recalling the saint’s intelligence, humor, and humility, Father Krolikowski said that “the brothers loved him so much. When he was arrested by the Nazis, 20 brothers applied to replace him, ready to die in his place, and the Nazi colonel said, ‘Even if it be 1,000 you would not liberate him. He is precious to us.’”

Before classes start at Evangelical Lutheran liberal arts Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, MN, freshman students are exposed to a series of orientation to help them become acquainted with the "college life." A few clips from such an orientation were put on Youtube. They feature extremely sexually suggestive theatrics which explain to incoming students such things as where to get free condoms on campus and how to signal to your roommate that you are busy having sex - so he waits until later to come in.
