Hi Rene and thanks for the kind wishes.
I'm pretty sure that Ireland doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving with turkey and stuffing the same way we do here in the States. However, perhaps you can have some Irish stew or corned beef and cabbage and be thankful anyway.

Regarding the condom issue, I would like you to consider several comments I made on another thread. These points are rhetorical questions that are simply posted for your consideration.

How in the world did we descend to the point where the Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church is discussing with a secular journalist the subject of homosexual male prostitutes, their sexuality and condoms?

What will be the effect of these comments among the one billion members of the Catholic Church with 10s of millions of them already practicing artificial birth control? Will these comments attributed to the pope act to confuse or clarify?

Will history view this moment as a glorious time in Benedict's papacy or will it be looked upon as an unfortunate time of confusion among the laity and subterfuge among opportunistic bishops and priests?

✍️ Hi there Cannoli - happy turkey and merry thanksgiving.
re the condom remark - I don't see it as a recommendation of the use of condoms at all but a teaching to us to be glad at any movement that is towards right living. He can't at all recommend condoms - it's against Church teaching and he has been a champion in upholding Church teaching. Do you know that condoms melt in the African heat which …More

He can't at all recommend condoms - it's against Church teaching and he has been a champion in upholding Church teaching. Do you know that condoms melt in the African heat which makes them even more unreliable - they're a disaster for Africa. Having said that I'm not recommending that people in the Arctic use condoms! If the editor of L'Oservatore Romano reads what I just said I'd be worn out trying to explain myself! - Blessings - Rene

Hello Rene.
It's not about condom use per se it's about movement (even miniscule) towards right living?
I agree but the point is the diametrically opposite position that was taken in 2009. When referring to condoms the Pope said:

If condoms increased the problem in 2009 as indicated, why do you think the Holy Father recommended them (albeit under special circumstances in order to achieve "right living") now?

To be consistent, shouldn't condoms have been recommended by the pope in 2009 with the same qualifications as he used today?

Despite Cardinal Raymond Burke's comments to the contrary (file under: damage control), who can deny the confusion that currently exists within the Catholic Church over the papal interview documented in his book, β€œLight of the World.”

Benedict drew the wrath of the United Nations, European governments and AIDS activists when, en route to Africa in March 2009, he told reporters that the AIDS problem on the continent couldn't be resolved by distributing condoms. "One cannot overcome the problem (AIDS) with the distribution of condoms. On the contrary, they increase the problem," the pope said.

Fast forward to the press release of November 20, 2010.

Pope Benedict XVI opens the door on the previously taboo subject of condoms as a way to fight AIDS with this:
"There may be a basis in the case of some individuals, as perhaps when a male prostitute uses a condom, where this can be a first step in the direction of a moralization, a first assumption of responsibility".

A stunning comment for a pontiff who, as recently as March of 2009, blamed condoms for making the AIDS crisis worse.
