Leo XIV honors the secularist Atatürk: On 27 November, Pope Leo XIV visited the Anıtkabir mausoleum in Ankara, the tomb of Kemal Atatürk (1881–1938). He took part in an official wreath-laying ceremony — a symbolic tribute to the founder and first president of modern Turkey. Yet Atatürk is not someone a Pope should honour. He dismantled the Ottoman millet system, where religious communities governed themselves, and imposed a top-down secularism designed to control religious authority and reorder a post-imperial, non-Christian society. By the time he came to power, most Christian communities — Armenians, Greek Orthodox and Syriac Christians — had already been killed or displaced. Leo XIV Declined "Offer" to Pray in Blue Mosque: This morning, Pope Leo XIV visited Istanbul's Blue Mosque. He bowed slightly and removed his shoes before entering.
