A Catholic in Politics

Canada

Andrew Scheer, a 32-year-old Catholic and father of four from Saskatchewan, has been elected the youngest speaker in the history of Canada’s Parliament. Scheer was described by a Canadian pro-life newspaper as a “passionate social conservative”. He is “unabashedly pro-life” and has spoken out against same-sex marriage. In 2010 he invited Opus Dei’s vicar for Canada to the Parliament’s restaurant.

The First Episcopalian Parish to Become Catholic

USA

St. Luke’s Episcopal Parish in Blandensburg will be the first in the US to join the Church under a new streamlined conversion process created by Pope Benedict XVI. The parish will come under the care of Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington. He is forming a United States ordinariate — effectively a national diocese — for converted Episcopalians. Episcopalian Bishop John Chane of Washington said he had approved St. Luke’s decision and would allow the congregation to continue worshiping in their church under a lease with an option to buy the building.

Lesbian Comic Was Not Disinvited

Canada

The lesbian comic Dawn Whitwell has tried to cook up a scandal by claiming that she was blocked from an appearance at Bishop Marrocco-Thomas Merton Catholic high school in Toronto. Whitwell alleged that she was disinvited after the responsible learned about her homosexual union. But a spokesman for the local Catholic school board made it clear that the comic had not received an invitation to speak. The board decided against her appearance because school officials were worried that she might fail to take the issue on which she should have spoken, seriously. Catholic culture comments on the coverage by the Globe and Mail: Although the comic’s claim is contradicted by the school board’s story, the paper’s headline clearly endorses Whitwell’s version. And the Catholic school board appeared reluctant to say forthrightly that a Catholic school should not host a speaking appearance by an avowed homosexual.

First Ordination in the Old Rite

Poland

For the first time in Poland since the liturgical reforms, a sacerdotal ordination according to the traditional Roman Rite took place on Sunday, June 5, 2011, in Krakow. Bishop Tadeusz Pieronek ordained Fr. Marek Grabowski FSSP. There is an FSSP-maintained morning TLM from Monday to Saturday in Wawel Cathedral in Krakow, plus two Sunday TLM's in the Holy Cross Church of the same city.

Members of the school board are fearful of the leftist politicians in Canada who have practically made it a criminal offense ( “hate speech”) to speak negatively about sodomy.

Would a Jewish school invite a Holocaust denier to speak to Jewish children? If not, then why shouldn't a Catholic school disallow an individual whose beliefs and lifestyle are antithetical to the Catholic faith speak before their children?
