Remembering Other Times
Vatican
L’Osservatore Romano has reprinted the Pope’s account of his ordination to the priesthood on the occasion of the Pontiff’s celebration of the 60th anniversary of this day. The future Pontiff was ordained for the archdiocese of Munich together with his brother, Msgr. Georg Ratzinger. The Pope recalls how following his ordination, he visited homes to bring the faithful the blessing of a new priest, and “everywhere we were received even by total strangers with a warmth and affection I had not thought possible until that day.”
The Second Pallium
Vatican
Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles spoke with Vatican Radio about the June 29 ceremony in which he received the pallium. The archbishop said that the ceremony in Rome underlined “the unity of the Church.” The pallium is a white woolen vestment worn across the shoulders during liturgical ceremonies. It is conferred by the Pope upon newly appointed archbishops …More

Ladies,

There must be a little give & take in all negotiations. As part of the deal, I've been asked to give up associating with my Sicilian friends who have been unfairly labeled by the bigoted anti-Italain media as “mobsters.” They are not mobsters. They are simply misunderstood legitimate businessmen with values and norms that conflict slightly with preconceived notions of established social etiquette. They have repeatedly been unfairly charged by anti-Italian, government prosecutors with gun trafficing, contract killing, money laundering, loansharking, and extortion but there were no convictions on any of those bogus charges. Some of these same falsely accused men were altar boys in their youth and even sang in the church choir.

In return, all KGB memorabilia including but not limited to identification cards, secret recording devices, miniature cameras, portraits of Vladimir Putin, and statures of Stalin and Lenin along with copies of the Communist Manifesto would have to be removed and destroyed immediately. Lastly, I am no longer to be referred to as "Comrade Cannoli."

It is a small thing, I know. But, could this casualness in small matters reflect on one's attitude with respect to other more important matters? Lex orandi, lex credendi

Buon giorno, Doina

Evidently, the very nice blouse you've worn today meets your critics approval. If you would like a volunteer consultant who would be honored to make wardrobe recommendations and field any complaints, Holy Cannoli (a maxima cum laude graduate of Don Guido Sarducci's Sicilian School of Fashion and/or Behavior Modification) holds an advanced degree in fashion and, more importantly, he is highly skilled in the art (and science) of conflict resolution.

June 30 Blessed Raymond Lull
(1235-1315)

Raymond worked all his life to promote the missions and died a missionary to North Africa. Raymond was born at Palma on the island of Mallorca in the Mediterranean Sea. He earned a position in the king’s court there. One day a sermon inspired him to dedicate his life to working for the conversion of the Muslims in North Africa. He became a Secular Franciscan and founded a college where missionaries could learn the Arabic they would need in the missions. Retiring to solitude, he spent nine years as a hermit. During that time he wrote on all branches of knowledge, a work which earned him the title "Enlightened Doctor."
Raymond then made many trips through Europe to interest popes, kings and princes in establishing special colleges to prepare future missionaries. He achieved his goal in 1311 when the Council of Vienne ordered the creation of chairs of Hebrew, Arabic and Chaldean at the universities of Bologna, Oxford, Paris and Salamanca. At the age of 79, Raymond went to North Africa in 1314 to be a missionary himself. An angry crowd of Muslims stoned him in the city of Bougie. Genoese merchants took him back to Mallorca, where he died. Raymond was beatified in 1514.

Comment:

Raymond worked most of his life to help spread the gospel. Indifference on the part of some Christian leaders and opposition in North Africa did not turn him from his goal. Three hundred years later Raymond’s work began to have an influence in the Americas. When the Spanish began to spread the gospel in the New World, they set up missionary colleges to aid the work. Blessed Junipero Serra belonged to such a college.

Quote:

Thomas of Celano wrote of St. Francis: "In vain does the wicked man persecute one striving after virtue, for the more he is buffeted, the more strongly will he triumph. As someone says, indignity strengthens a generous spirit" (I Celano, #11).
