Monaco: Catholic Royal Wedding
Sky News Online Prince Albert of Monaco and Charlene Wittstock have exchanged wedding rings and vows in church - amid persistent rumours that the ex-Olympic swimming star was almost a runaway bride. The 53-year-old prince and his South African bride took part in the Roman Catholic ceremony at Monaco Cathedral this afternoon. The bride entered the cathedral in a white dress with veil, accompanied by her father, and with a 15-foot train behind her. Her husband, who was wearing a white military uniform, winked at her at the altar. The pair also tied the knot in a Monte Carlo civil ceremony on Friday. But the excitement of the two events was marred by reports that Miss Wittstock had second thoughts about becoming Her Serene Highness and fled to Nice airport with a one-way ticket home. It was suggested she had found out a secret about Albert, who has two children with other women but is yet to produce a legitimate heir. Miss Wittstock, 33, was apparently intercepted by royal aides and persuaded to stay, before Monaco's royal palace dismissed the claims.

SB, you are right...When I was a child, the (Latin)Mass, of course, used to be celebrated in Latin..Then, when my daughter received her Confirmation Catechism, and we started going to (Latin)Mass in Latin, again, with the St. Petrusbruderschaft-WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!

I don't argue - I've tried to say all along that both rites is GOOD, that we need BOTH rites, not just one! I do know that the Pope wants it that way and I agree 100%! Every language gives richness to the Church. Latin is the Holy Language our whole Chruch has been built upon and still rests on. So let's not argue about the languages anymore...

Holy Cannoli: I ment variety only in terms of spoken languages; but yes, that video showed a litlle bit TOO MUCH variety! Actually it's no laughing matter. First I thought it was a Babtist service, then realized to my horror, it's a Catholic Mass! If the Mass becomes more and more like a protestant service, I don't know where we'll end up. Or I KNOW, but fear to think about it...

variety should be the name of the game.

Here's a little "variety" for you, Tes. Enjoy it.

That's what I mean: variety should be the name of the game. I don't say that the Mass in Latin should not be, FAR FROM IT. I only mean that we shouldn't have the Mass ONLY in Latin. When you want to go to a Latin Mass, there should be the possibility for you to do so. But when you want to go to an English, or a German, or Polish-Finnish-French Mass, that should also be possible. Live and let live... As for me, I dream of a Mass, NOT a five-hour-drive away, where the closest Catholic Church is.. … [More]

Hi, TES! I will not argueI sometimes go to Mass celebrated in Latin, but the priest gives the homily in German, and so I appreciate that...
When the Pope celebrates Mass this summer at the WYD in Spain, I am sure that he will be doing it in Spanish, in Latin, and MANY other languages

Why do we argue about the languages: Jesus didn't speak Latin! Most of the texts we read are translations, books too. All the people who can't speak Russian but want to read Dostojewsky, read translations. The Bible is also a translation, the world's most widely translated book. So why do we argue about languages? The Mass is a translation from Latin - well of course it is! But when a Finn who doesn't speak Latin hears the Mass in his own language, he hears the Mass in Finnish and does not … [More]

She would not have understood Latin no more than French. I understand what you mean though, but if our Mother Church has made the decision that the Mass does not have to be in Latin, then it doesn't. And since Charlene Wittstock comes from South Africa and has only recently become Catholic, Latin wouldn't have made her feel any more at home. IT's just like by myself: IN my home country Latin is not tought at school, so now that I've become Catholic, I can't speak Latin. being Catholic doesn't … [More]

@TES - maybe, therefore, the Mass ought to have been in LATIN!!! As it ought to have been!

It did not belong in the Mass, but as I understood it, since she was South-African and did not understand one word of French, it was a gift form him, so that she would at least have one part in the ceremony that would come from her old country. It must be hard when you don't know the language and everything around you is in French. You get married once in your life, it's the high-light-moment of your life and you don't understand one word of it. We should try to understand them a little. It … [More]

YES, I felt so sad that the HOLY MASS was disrespected by this and other blasphemies!! If his parents had still been alive, everything might have been different....R.I.P.

@ACL--PRECISELY-my thoughts!!!:
"Pity, they did not get married within the Roman Catholic Cathedral in Monaco! " Not only that, but, I was watching the Mass, and after the exchange of wedding rings, all of a sudden, out of nowhere, this crazy singer belts out a "good luck" South African song!

Gosh..... the Church of England does it so much better!! However, seeing some old footage of the coronation of the last anointed catholic Queen (of Austria I believe), the old Pontificale Romanum really had it spot on!! Pity, they did not get married within the Roman Catholic Cathedral in Monaco!

It was suggested she [Miss Wittstock] had found out a secret about Albert, who has two children with other women but is yet to produce a legitimate heir.

This is a secret?
Doesn't the Royal Princess know how to surf the net?
