Real Monasterio de la Encarnación, Madrid
Budgetplaces on Mar 14, 2011The Real Monasterio de la Encarnación, or Royal Monastery of the Incarnation,is a convent located in the centre of Madrid and dates back to the XVII century. It is open to the public and is a fully functional monastery to this day. Founded by the Queen Margaret of Austria, wife of Philip III, the majority of nuns here were women from noble families and it was therefore well funded. It was finally opened in 1616 and the monastery has since served as a home to the order of Recolet Augustines, also known as “las margaritas” in honor of its founder. Located close to the Royal Alcázar, there is a passageway to allow direct access to the Real Monasterio de la Encarnación. Its sober façade lends a noble air with simple beauty and grace. Here you can see the large number of works of art and religious relics including tubes of the blood of Saint Genaro and Saint Pantaleón.
