In our days the bells have only a decorative purpose. Therefore only a few goats wear them. Further, I believe, the farmer would not have bells for all the animals. But after all, the animals are behind fences. They cannot run away and therefore would not need bells at all.

Liebe Tina, in der Schweiz scheint die Welt noch in Ordnung zu sein.. Eine einmütige Herde, die bereitwillig, so ganz ohne Murren, dem Leittier folgen zu den besten Weideplätzen..

Vielleicht hat der Bauer nicht so viel Glocken. Aber normalerweise genügt für eine eingezäunte Herde, dass nur das Leittier eine Glocke trägt.

I am a city boy so forgive my silly question. Why do some of the goats wear bells around their necks and most of the goats do not?

The only goats I see are those in Washington D.C. who prefer to call themselves "politicians."
