A Few Catholics Still Insist Galileo Was Wrong

They say Earth is the center of the universe, embracing church teachings of four centuries ago.

Some people believe the world revolves around them — and their belief is born not of selfishness but of faith.

A few conservative Roman Catholics are pointing to a dozen Bible verses and the church's original teachings as proof that Earth is the center of the universe, the view that was at the heart of the church's clash with Galileo Galilei four centuries ago.

But by challenging modern science, proponents of a geocentric universe are challenging the very church they seek to serve and protect.

"I have no idea who these people are," said Brother Guy Consolmagno, curator of meteorites and spokesman for the Vatican Observatory. "Are they sincere, or is this a clever bit of theater?"

Technically speaking. An astronomer will tell you that there is no center of the universe. Or rather that every point is the center of the universe. Everything is moving away from everything else, sort of like dots drawn on a baloon that is expanding. Although this may seem as counter-intuitive it is what science has revealed.

It is easy in our human nature to believe that we are the center of the universe.

A newborn infant must learn through experimentation and sensation that he is a part of the world, not the entirety. Any parent can attest that as children mature, they must be helped to understand that the universe does not revolve around them and their needs and desires.

Even as adults, we often struggle to see the world from a perspective other than our own.

This is rather like those ultra-conservatives who, lacking the intelligence and education to know any better, plough through old Church encyclicals of centries ago, and challenge the Church's teachings today because such-and-such an encyclical teaches to the contrary. In so doing, they proclaim that the Second Oecumenical Council of the Vatican is wrong and heretical (and all the rest of it!).
