Pope: "Monasteries have a valuable function in today's world.

The presence of a monastic community is a constant reminder of God, an opening towards Heaven, said Benedict XVI, meeting with the people of Serra San Bruno, during a pastoral visit to Calabria. The Pope explained the relevance of the monastery in a community; "The climate that reigns in our society -- he said -- is not healthy, it is tainted by a mindset that is not Christian, or even human, because it is dominated by economic interests, it is concerned only with earthly things". Therefore, in a world which marginalises God and neighbour, without regard for the common good, monastic communities play an indispensable role: it purifies the environment, opening it up to the spiritual dimension.
