Sadly the RC Church, in keeping the Bible in Latin, effectively prevented the faithful from reading it.
"At that time, it was thought that it would profane the Scriptures to put them into common languages that anyone could understand—languages they believed simply weren't worthy of communicating the Word of God. Latin, it was believed, was the only holy language."
