What Were the Reasons for the Low Turnout?

The low turnout for a Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI outside Jerusalem on May 14 has prompted inquiries from the Apostolic Nuncio. Although organizers of the papal trip expected a congregation of 5,000, only about 3,000 appeared. The area was under tight security, with tickets required for entry, and the faithful were required to arrive several hours before the Eucharistic celebration. Archbishop Antonio Franco, the Papal Nuncio, is looking into reports that some people with tickets were turned away.

The paper quotes Metropolitan Hilarion of Vienna, a major spokesman for the Moscow patriarchate in ecumenical affairs. According to him a summit meeting seems more likely for this pontificate, because this pope, in contrast to the previous one, doesn’t strive to always be politically correct – Hilarion is quoted. The Pope, according to Hilarion, believes he must speak of the teachings of the Catholic Church. The task of such a Church figure, especially of such rank, is to clearly state the teaching of the Church, even if it doesn’t correspond to contemporary standards of political correctness – Hilarion stated.

Religious-affairs officials in one province of Uzbekistan have banned Mel Gibson's film, The Passion of the Christ-- which is not surprising, since they have also banned the Bible. Copies of the Bible have been confiscated by police in recent raids. National government officials have refused to comment.

Yesterday, Pope Benedict XVI. celebrated mass in Montecassino, beneath the famous Benedictine Abbey, where St. Benedict, the patron of the Europe rests. The Holy Father addressed the faithful before praying the Regina Coeli. He stressed the contribution of Benedictine monasticism to the dignity of prayer and of work as well as the importance of “daily contemplation on the Word of God.”
