Caritas Ecuador assists 5,000 victimized families.

According to Caritas Ecuador the humanitarian aid distribution of food, medicine, water, mosquito nets, and hygiene materials to flood victims will continue in the Ecuadorian provinces of Los Ríos and Manabí in collaboration with the Episcopal Conference.

Caritas Ecuador also reports that the next immediate step is an emergency plan to attend to the urgent needs of 5,000 families. The primary goal of this operation is to assure that victims be guaranteed food, drinkable water, and the necessary materials for the repair of houses, as well as to provide medical attention through brigades and the existing health units and centers available in the dioceses affected by the floods.

"Caritas Ecuador has put into effect an emergency operation for this crisis in collaboration with the social pastoral departments of the areas of Machala, Babahoyo, Portoviejo and Azogues, and with the local civil defense organizations", Caritas reports.

Besides assisting victims, "Caritas is evaluating the extent of the damage caused in order to identify the cases that require more attention. The crisis has struck a fourth of the country's total area and approximately 315,000 families. The agricultural damage is enormous and estimated to be 200 million dollars".

The latest news provided by Caritas Ecuador confirms that 600 cases of infection have been detected as well as numerous cases of skin rashes.
