geobeats French Village of Eguisheim, (France) - Bruno d'Eguisheim, fils du comte Hugues IV du Nordgau et de Heilwige de Dabo, est né le 21 juin 1002 dans le château d'Eguisheim. Il était destiné au sacerdoce. Après avoir suivi des études à Toul, il devient chapelain de l'Empereur Conrad II, son cousin, puis évêque de Toul en 1026. Il a développé pendant son épiscopat une volonté de réforme de l'Eglise en refusant l'ingérence de l'Empereur dans le domaine spirituel. C'est lui que l'Empereur désigne en 1048 pour être le nouveau Pape. Son intronisation en 1049 marque un tournant de l'histoire de la chrétienté. Voyageur remarquable, il entreprend des visites en Allemagne, en Lorraine, en Alsace et en Italie du Sud. Il a réuni de nombreux synodes et conciles pour engager la réforme morale de l'Eglise. Il a également largement travaillé à la restauration du pouvoir de la papauté en faisant apparaître sa conception de la centralisation de l'Eglise. Soucieux de maintenir la prédominance de Rome sur les autres Eglises, il n'a pu éviter le schisme d'Orient qui sera consommé en juillet 1054, peu après sa mort le 19 avril 1054, après sa défaite devant les Normands de Basse-Italie. Malgré cet échec, la papauté a retrouvé son prestige et sa popularité. La voie de la réforme de l'Eglise est engagée. Léon IX sera canonisé peu après sa mort en 1087 par le Pape Victor III. A Eguisheim, depuis 1894, une chapelle lui est dédiée. Elle a été construite à l'emplacement d'un ancien donjon, en style néo-roman. A l'intérieur, sur la voûte, ont été peints par MARTIN des médaillons dans le style du 11ème siècle. Ils représentent sept scènes de la vie de Saint-Léon, alors que les vitraux de celle-ci datant de 1895, symbolisent les Saints d'Alsace dont un grand nombre sont issus de la famille des Comtes d'Eguisheim. La chapelle est ouverte au public du mois d'avril au mois de novembre. Des messes y sont célébrées.

After studying in Toul, he became Chaplain to his cousin, Conrad II, then Bishop of Toul in 1026. Throughout his episcopacy, he strived to reform the Church and refused to accept the interference of the Emperor in spiritual matters. In 1048, the Emperor appointed him as the new Pope. His enthronement in 1049 marked a turning-point in the history of Christianity. A remarkable traveller, he visited Germany, Lorraine, Alsace and the South of Italy. He convened numerous Synods and Ecumenical Councils in order to engage the moral reform of the Church. He also worked hard to restore Papal rule by promoting the concept of centralising the power of the Church. Determined to maintain the supremacy of Rome over the other Churches, he was nonetheless unable to prevent the schism with the Eastern Church that occurred in July 1054, just after his death the 19th April 1054 following imprisonment by the Normans in the South of Italy. Despite this failure, the Papacy had recovered its prestige and popularity, and the reform of the Church was under way. Shortly afterwards, in 1087, Pope Leo IX was canonised by Pope Victor III. In Eguisheim, since 1894, a chapel is dedicated to him. It was constructed in neo-roman style on the site of the former castle keep. On the vaulted ceiling are painted medaillons by the artist Martin, in 11th century style. They depicted 7 scenes from the life of St Leo, while the stained-glass windows, dating from 1895, symbolise the Saints of Alsace, many of whom came from the family of the Counts of Eguisheim. The chapel is open to the oublic from April to Novembre. Some mass take place in it.
