Severe Problems Facing the Church in Austria

Vatican
Pope Benedict XVI met on June 15 with a group of bishops from Austria, led by Cardinal Christoph Schönborn of Vienna. The meeting was scheduled in response to severe problems facing the Church in that country. The top item on the agenda was reportedly the situation in the Diocese of Linz, where an open rebellion among the clergy prompted the withdrawal of the Pope's decision to name Msgr. Gerhard Wagner as an auxiliary bishop earlier this year. The Austrian bishops had criticized the appointment, faulting the Vatican for a lack of consultation. The Church in Austria has been troubled by heavy defections and widespread dissent for years.
New Papal Physician

Vatican
Pope Benedict XVI has chosen a new personal physician. Dr. Patrizio Polisca, a cardiologist, was formally appointed as "vice director for health care and hygiene" for the Vatican city-state. In practice he will serve as the papal physician. Dr. Patrizio Polisca replaces Dr. Renato Buzzonetti, who has been the papal physician for more than 30 years. Dr. Buzzonetti, who was appointed by Pope John Paul II in 1978 and continued to serve under Pope Benedict, is retiring at the age of 84. Dr. Polisca had been acting as his assistant and accompanying him on papal trips for the past 9 years.
Church's Excessive Influence on Italy's Policies
Rome
Homosexual activists demanded same-sex marriage as they marched in Rome on June 13. Dressed as fake clergy with colorful hats and signs reading "No Vatican" participants protested what they say is the church's excessive influence on Italy's policies. The Associated Press estimated the crowd in the “tens of thousands.” Smaller crowds of 1,500 and 500 also marched in Warsaw and Zagreb.

Secular Ideology Deprives the Society of Many Benefits

Russia

The Moscow Patriarchate believes that the secular humanistic society model should not be imposed on the world as the only correct and forward-looking. The head of the Synodal Church and Society Department Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin said at a Moscow conference dedicated to relationships between religion and the state: “Demographic data, psychological tests and sociological research "convincingly show that secular ideology deprives the society of many benefits inherent to a society with a strong religious motivation."
