The shogunate and imperial governemt at first supported the Catholic mission and the missionaires, thinking that they would reduce the power of the Buddhist monks, and help trade with Spain and Portugal. However, the Shogunate was also wary of colonialism, seeing that in the Philippines the Spanish had taken power after converting the population. The government increasingly saw Roman Catholicism as a threat, and started persecuting Christians. Christianity was banned and those Japanese who refused to abandon their faith were killed. On February 5, 1597, twenty-six Christians--Six European Franciscan missionairies, three Japanese Jesuits and seventeen Japanese laymen including three young boys--were executed by crucifixion in NAGASAKI. These individuals were raised on crosses and then pierced through with spears. When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne; they cried out with a loud voice,"O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before thou wilt judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell upon the earth? Genesis 18:22-26 So the men turned from there, and went toward Sodom; but Abraham still stood before the Lord. Then Abraham drew near, and said, "Wilt thou indeed destroy the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; wilt thou then destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it? Far be it from thee to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from thee! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?" And the Lord said, "If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will the spare the whole place for their sake."

God would not destroy the righteous with the wicked, but He would spare the whole for their sake. There is not a war fought in this world today that could claim the same; countries drop bombs with the full knowledge that they are going to kill many people, either deliberately or as collateral damage, who have committed no crime and pose no threat.

The time when soldiers met each other in a battlefield to fight out their differences has ended. Today we have bombs dropped from above, mobile artillery shooting shells, cruise missiles, etc. killing both combatants and civilians alike with little discrimination. At the beginning of the last century most of the casualties of war were soldiers, at the beginning of the 21st century most of the casualties of war are civilians; many of them under the age of 18.

If we cannot fight wars that only target those who pose a true threat, then we must give up on fighting wars; far be it from us to slay the righteous with the wicked.

God Bless,
