Moving On

Canada

Pope Benedict has named Auxiliary Bishop Brian Joseph Dunn of Sault Ste. Marie as Bishop of Antigonish. The Nova Scotia diocese had been governed by Bishop Raymond Lahey, who resigned after child pornography had been founded on his laptop computer. “I’m aware there is a difficult situation in the Diocese of Antigonish,” said Bishop Dunn. “People are feeling a lot of hurt and anger and have a lot of questions about trust. Dealing with this will be a priority.”

Referendum Against the Construction of Minarets

Switzerland

Coming Sunday, there is a referendum in Switzerland on whether to add the sentence “The construction of minarets is forbidden” to Article 72 of the Constitution. Muslims and churchmen are pleading with the Swiss to vote against the ban. Right-wing Swiss parties behind the referendum describe minarets as “symbols of a religious-political claim to power and dominance which threatens – in the name of alleged freedom of religion – the constitutional rights of others.” It is improbable that the referendum will pass.

A Palestinian Saint

Holy Land

Thousands of worshippers gathered on Sunday in the biblical town of Nazareth to attend the beatification of the late Sister Maria Alfonsina Danil Ghattas, a Palestinian nun who co-founded the Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary of Jerusalem in the 1880s. In his Sunday address, before praying the angelus the Holy Father noted that "Mother Ghattas" has "the merit" of having founded "a congregation formed solely of women of the region, with the purpose of religious instruction, to overcome illiteracy and improve the conditions of the women of that time in the land where Jesus himself exalted their dignity."

Anglo-Catholics Threatend

United Kingdom

Fr David Waller of St Saviour’s, Walthamstow, the vicar of an Anglo-Catholic church has received a threatening phone call warning him of violence if his parish goes over to Rome – Damian Thompson reports on his famous blog. The noticeboard of the church has been defaced with the words “Church of England No Pope” daubed across it in white paint. Fr Waller discovered the vandalism on Sunday morning as he prepared for Mass. Then he found a message waiting for him on his answering machine threatening him with physical violence. Although no decision has been made, Fr Waller is very encouraged by the Pope’s offer of a Personal Ordinariate.
