“Interfaith Chapel” at a Catholic University

Thomas More University is the Catholic liberal arts university of the Diocese of Covington, Kentucky. As such, it operates under diocesan authority, including oversight of its Catholic identity, liturgical life, and the designation and use of worship spaces.
This arrangement remains under the oversight of the current diocesan bishop, Bishop John C. Iffert, who has publicly defended a Mass associated with an LGBTQ support group, and in January 2024, removed ministerial faculties from priests critical of the post–Vatican II Roman Rite.
A concerned reader recently alerted the Lepanto Institute to the existence of a so-called “interfaith chapel” in operation on the campus of this Catholic university. Photos of the chapel supplied by the reader show Muslim prayer rugs, prayer beads, Jewish head coverings, and other religious materials linked to the religious practices of non-Christians. In light of this, the Lepanto Institute contacted the University for an explanation.

Program for Leo XIV’s Consistory – "Working Groups" Like the Synod

On 7–8 January, Pope Leo XIV will preside over the first extraordinary consistory of his pontificate. Time is short and the cardinals are many.
Day One: Opening and First Session
Registration will begin at noon on 7 January in the atrium of the Paul VI Hall.
After a welcome coffee, proceedings will not begin until 3:30 p.m. in the New Synod Hall with communal prayer, followed by greetings from the Dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re.
Leo XIV will then deliver an introductory address and outline the work to be undertaken.
Three Sessions Over Two Days
The consistory is structured in three sessions over two days and will rely on small working groups, which will later present group reports.
This method was previously used during the meeting of cardinals on the reform of the Roman Curia in late summer 2022. Traditionally, a consistory was conducted in a plenary, centralized format, quite different from the small-group method now being used.

One doesn’t usually go to the St. Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologica for advice on emotional matters. But for the feast of St. Thomas we shall indeed go there to seek advice on sorrow and consider some of St. Thomas’ remedies for it. (His advice is contained primarily in the Prima Secundae questions 35 – 37.)
St. Thomas follows some of the Eastern fathers in naming four kinds of sorrow (cf I IIae 35:8): anxiety, torpor, pity, and envy. Let’s look at each before examining some of the remedies he suggests:
1. Anxiety – This is a kind of sorrow that emerges when the mind is so weighed down by something that escape seem impossible. St. Thomas’ definition is likely rooted in the Latin word angustia, which is a narrow pass or straight. And thus anxiety tends to arise when we experience stress over a situation and find no room to maneuver, no way out. Anxiety tends to pertain to the future, in contrast with pain, which generally pertains to the present. With pain, one can suffer about a …

Dozens of Charlotte Priests Appeal to Vatican Over Liturgical Restrictions

31 priests of the Diocese of Charlotte have formally challenged recent liturgical directives issued by Bishop Michael Martin, submitting Dubia to of all places the Vatican.
The Substack.com account The Pillar reports that the priests’ letter to the Dicastery for Legislative Texts was sent on January 5. It questions whether the bishop has the authority to mandate the removal and prohibition of kneelers for Communion.
This a policy was announced in a “pastoral” letter by Bishop Martin on December 17. Temporary kneeling fixtures are required to be removed by Jan. 16.
Thirty-one priests are about a quarter of the diocesan presbyterate. They argue that kneeling for Communion is explicitly permitted by the General Instruction of the Roman Missal and part of the traditional liturgical practice of the Church.

Within the communion of saints, Mary holds a unique place not only as the Mother of God but as the supreme model of the interior life. Her existence is marked by receptivity, fidelity, and contemplative attentiveness to the word of God. To speak of spiritual development is to speak of Mary, because she embodies the perfection of prayerful relationship with God.
The Gospel reveals her as the first believer of the New Covenant. Her fiat is not a single act but the expression of a lifelong disposition: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”¹ This is the fundamental posture of authentic prayer. Prayer begins in listening. It matures in consent. It bears fruit in obedience. Mary demonstrates all three with simplicity and depth.
