A New Feast in the Church?

Vatican

Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera, Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship, announced on Monday his intention to ask the Holy Father, in this Year for Priests, to extend the Feast of Jesus Christ the Eternal High Priest to the Entire Church. The feast is currently celebrated in Spain on the Thursday after Pentecost by concession of Paul VI. A Votive Mass for Thursdays with that theme was first introduced under Pius XI in the year 1935. It exists also as votive Mass in the Roman Missal of the Ordinary Form.

Catholic Democrat Criticizes Obama

USA

On Feb. 23, US-Representative Bart Stupak has commented on US-President Obama’s health care proposal: “Unfortunately, the President's proposal encompasses the Senate language allowing public funding of abortion”. Stupak is a Catholic democrat who is outspokenly opposed to abortion. He added: “The Senate language is a significant departure from current law and is unacceptable.”

Archbishop Fisichella Want Resign

Vatican

Pontifical Academy for Life head, Archbishop Rino Fisichella, has dismissed calls for his resignation following an uproar over his stance about the abortion performed on a nine-year-old Brazilian child raped by her stepfather. Five members of the 145-member body issued a statement last week, at the end of the Academy's closed meeting, again questioning Fisichella's suitability for office. Fisichella had said "mercy" should be applied in the case, and that the local bishop, Archbishop Jose Cardoso Sobrinho, should not have been so quick to excommunicate the doctors who had performed the abortion.

The Bishops Stand Up

Philippines

Less than two weeks after the Philippine government distributed condoms for Valentine’s Day, some Philippine bishops are calling for the resignation of the nation’s health secretary, Esperanza Cabral. “It is immoral for a government official to support the distribution of condoms which we know do not really reduce or stop the spread of HIV-AIDS,” said Archbishop Ramon Arguelles of Lipa. “It’s worrying because it is the morality in society, especially among the youth, that is at stake.”
