German Abbot Unjustly Removed Over Unverified Abuses

Benedictine Abbot Barnabas Bögle of Ettal in Bavaria was unjustly removed last February following claims that he had mishandled an abuse case. Famous German psychiatrist and author Manfred Lütz, has published a strong defense of the abbot. His article appeared in the very prestigious “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”. Lütz points out that the abbot acted very responsibly and carefully in a case that later turned out not to be an abuse at all. The psychiatrist who was personally involved in the case, at an early stage, accuses now the priest who handles abuses cases in the archdiocese of Munich to have misread documents concerning the case and drawn wrong conclusions.
