Yesterday the Vatican has officially confirmed that a commission has been established to investigate the reported Marian apparitions at Medjugorje. Today Andrea Tornielli of the Italian daily Il Giornale has named several members of that commission. Besides Cardinal Camillo Ruini, who was announced before to chair the commission, Tornielli says that the other members include Cardinal Vinko Puljic of Sarajevo; Archbishop Josip Bozanic of Zagreb; Cardinal Julian Herranz, the former president of the Pontifical Commission for Legislative Texts; and Father Tony Anatrella, a French psychologist and Marian expert. The commission will also include lay members, the Giornale reporter says.

Pope Benedict XVI's letter to the Irish Church, in response to the sex-abuse crisis there, will be released on Saturday, March 20, the Vatican press office has announced. During his weekly public audience on March 17 the Holy Father had said that he would sign the letter on March 19 and it would be released shortly thereafter; but he had not given an exact date.

Breaking with his brother bishops, retired Bishop John McCarthy has endorsed Senate health care reform legislation. Bishop McCarthy led the Diocese of Austin from 1986 until his retirement at age 70 in 2001. Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston and two other bishops wrote recently that the legislation would “expand federal participation in abortion, require people to pay for other people's abortions, and refuse to incorporate essential conscience protections.” Bishop McCarthy, however, told the Associated Press that taxpayers would not pay for abortions under the Senate bill. “Let's not kill [the legislation] at this crucial moment,” he said.

Today's financial crisis demonstrates the need for a new global economic system, Pope Benedict XVI told a group of visiting Italian entrepreneurs on March 18. Citing his social encyclical Caritas in Veritate, the Holy Father called for a system that will "focus on the person, whom Christ revealed in his profoundest dignity." He also repeated that encyclical's call for "the reform and creation of an international juridical and political order" to oversee the functions of the global economy.
