ST. PAUL - Grieving congregants gathered in a church surrounded by yellow crime tape in St. Paul on Saturday evening to remember the loving priest who was shot to death in the front doorway of its rectory less than 24 hours earlier.

The Rev. Father Gerard Gauthier choked back tears during the Mass at St. Paul’s Cathedral, a stately old church with a soaring spire that dominates the skyline in the town of 6,000 people in east-central Alberta (Canada).

A native of Cameroon, Father Gilbert Dasna was found gravely wounded in his residence at the rear of the church parking lot on a day that will long not be forgotten in this town.

Shortly after Dasna was discovered fighting for his life, three RCMP officers were wounded during a gunfight just a few hundred metres down St. Paul’s Main Street that left the assailant dead behind the wheel of his pickup truck.
