As Serious As the Economic Crisis

Vatican

Society today is facing a "cultural and spiritual crisis, as serious as the economic crisis," Pope Benedict XVI told a meeting of the Italian bishops' conference in a May 27 address. "It would be illusory to counter one, ignoring the other," he added. The Holy Father said that the spiritual crisis stems from "uncertainty about values, evident in the struggles of many adults to honor commitments." He commended the Italian bishops for choosing to make education of the youth in faith their top priority for the next decade.

Avvenire remembers Jonny Cash

Italy

Avvenire, the newspaper of the Italian Bishops’ Conference’s remembered Johnny Cash on Sunday for how his music “sang the faith”. Cash died in September 2003. Without his faith, the article said, "the voice of Cash would not have been the same." The newspaper wrote about the man who "knew" prison and nearly died of a drug overdose, but "still at a certain point in his life, took from it a possible Meaning, with a capital letter." Cash dedicated the last of his songs, the paper noted, "to sorrowful, moving hymns to man, inserted within his own faith in a God that gives horizons and hopes to man."
