The Hong Kong Court of Appeal has been hearing the appeal of Cardinal Joseph Zen (93, retired Catholic bishop of Hong Kong) and four other trustees of the 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund: barrister Margaret Ng, academic Hui Po-keung, former lawmaker Cyd Ho, and singer-activist Denise Ho. They were convicted in November 2022 of failing to register the 612 Fund as a “society” under Hong Kong’s Societies Ordinance and each fined HK$4,000; the fund’s secretary, Sze Shing-wai, was fined HK$2,500 and is not part of the appeal.

Cardinal Gerhard Müller reflects in the newspaper Die Tagespost on December 4 on the 60th anniversary of Vatican II. He claims that debates about the interpretation of the Council have significantly shaped the faith of many Catholics since the 1960s [while in reality, Cathoilcs simply vanished]. The Cardinal notes that both “traditionalist” and “progressivist” approaches can misinterpret the Council: the former want to go behind the Council, while the latter seek to move beyond it. He argues that the Council itself distinguishes between the unchangeable substance of Catholic doctrine, liturgy, and Church constitution, and the "changeable" forms of expression or liturgical practice. Archbishop Georg Gänswein, the Apostolic Nuncio to the Baltic States, has renewed his call for a peaceful approach to the Roman Rite. In a press release, the German broadcaster K-TV announced that the full interview will air on Sunday. In it, Archbishop Gänswein comments on Pope Francis’ 2021 motu proprio Traditionis custodes. He argued that the Church should once again consider the pastoral approach adopted by Pope Benedict XVI in 'Summorum Pontificum': "I consider Pope Benedict’s wise regulation to be the right path — and this path should be continued without burdens or restrictions," said Monsignor Gänswein.
