Altar in St Peter's Aberdeen.

Today is the feast of Blessed Miguel Pro, a Jesuit priest and martyr of Mexico's anti-clericalism of the 1920s. Padre Pro and his brother Humberto were executed by a firing squad. President Calles had news photographers present, expecting the Pros to die cowardly. But Padre Pro refused the blindfold and welcomed the bullets with his arms extended in the form of a cross, crying out, “Viva Cristo Rey!” Although Calles outlawed any public demonstration, thousands of Mexicans defiantly lined the streets, honouring the martyr as he was carried in procession to his grave. Looking up at this Altar, we see, Christ Crucified, the King of the Martyrs. This Altar is in Abedeen, in the church of St Peter (founded 1803), the first Catholic church to be built in Aberdeen after the 'Reformation'. It is of Belgian make, and it dates to c.1895-99.
