Benedict XVI visits Saint Lawrence Outside the Walls.

Joy and enthusiasm filled the Roman parish of St. Lawrence at Verano, which welcomed Benedict XVI on Sunday morning for the closing of the celebrations of the year of St. Lawrence on the occasion of the 1,750th anniversary of the martyrdom of the holy deacon. During his homily, the Holy Father urged everyone to follow his example, especially of "concern for the poor" and fidelity to Christ, a docile abandonment that led to martyrdom. This example echoes a renewed call to holiness, corresponding well with the first Sunday of Advent. "Advent means to call to mind the first coming of the Lord in the flesh - said Benedict XVI - while already thinking of His final return, yet at the same time recognizing that Christ is present among us as our companion on the journey of life."
From here comes the invitation to vigilence, precisely, "to spend every moment of our time in view of the love of Christ, not allowing ourselves to be beaten down by the inevitable difficulties and problems of daily life."
