The Ashes Serve as an Act of Renewal

Vatican

On Ash Wednesday the Holy Father dedicated his audience to the Lenten Season. He emphasized the importance of daily conversion for swimming "against the current" of a society that promotes a “superficial lifestyle” and “moral mediocrity.” As usual, in the late afternoon, he celebrated Ash Wednesday Mass in the Dominican church of Santa Sabina. According to the old usage, the Pope was dressed in a purple Dalmatic underneath a Roman chasuble.

US Vice President Joe Biden has Received the Ashes

Joe Biden, a pro-abortion Catholic, yesterday introduced President Obama at an event marking the first anniversary of the Recovery Act – a spending bill passed in 2009 – while the ashes were visible on Biden’s forehead. Biden is the nation’s first Catholic vice president. He regularly attends mass in Wilmington, Deleware. Last month his mother, Jean Finnegan Biden, had a Mass of Christian Burial at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Wilmington, the church she attended since 1955. In 2007 Biden claimed in an interview that his political views “are totally consistent with Catholic social doctrine.” He added: "I get comfort from carrying my rosary, going to mass every Sunday. It's my time alone.”

Bishops Doing Penance

Ireland

Five members of the Irish Bishops' Conference, led by their president and Primate of all Ireland Cardinal Sean Brady, addressed the media on Tuesday afternoon following two days of what they called "intense" discussions with Pope Benedict XVI and members of the Roman Curia. Cardinal Brady said in his remarks that the bishops should spend the penitential season of Lent doing penance to promote “a change of heart.”

Good Priests Are the Best Natural Encouragement

Vatican

Good priests are the best natural encouragement for young men considering a life in ministry, Pope Benedict XVI writes in his message of the 47th World Day of Prayer for Vocations. While prayer is the first essential means of ensuring new vocations, experience shows that the witness offered by faithful priests can "awaken in others a desire to respond generously to Christ's call." The World Day of Prayer will be observed on April 25, the 4th Sunday of Lent.
