God Punishes Because He Loves Us

Austria

Two weeks after a stampede killed 21 people participating in the Love Parade in Germany, famous auxiliary bishop Andreas Laun of Salzburg said that it is rash judgment to state that the victims’ deaths are an act of God’s just punishment. “God alone is the judge, not men,” Laun said. But he added that at the same time it is an altogether different thing to state that participation in the Love Parade is “a rebellion against creation and against God’s order.” God punishes sins, he added, not because he is cruel and vengeful, but because He loves us.

Ground-Breaking Ceremony

Ukraine

Ukrainian Catholic and Orthodox bishops in Kolomyia have joined in a ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of a new church. This church is built as a joint project to celebrate the 1022nd anniversary of the “Baptism of the Rus” - the establishment of Christianity in Ukraine. The joint project is a remarkable breakthrough in a country that has seen persistent tensions between the Orthodox and the Byzantine-rite Ukrainian Catholic Church.
