Avoid the Secularization of Clergy

Yesterday in an audience Pope Benedict XVI advised bishops visiting from Brazil on how to respond to the lack of priests. The pope emphasized that this shortage cannot be solved by having lay people substitute for the clergy. The Holy Father pointed out to the Brazilian prelates the difference between the identity of priests and the laity. While the lay faithful share in the "common priesthood," they are not ordained ministers of Christ and His Church. "Hence," the Pope cautioned, "it is important to avoid the secularization of clergy and the 'clericalization' of the laity."

Church Seeks Exemption from New Legislation

Catholic schools in the Philippines are seeking an exemption from new legislation that bans the dismissal of employees or students because they are unwed mothers. “It is important that we respect the religious affiliation of these institutions, the schools, or company the persons belong to,” said Msgr. Gerardo Santos, national president of the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines.

Pope Meets Romanian Prime Minister

Pope Benedict XVI met on September 16 with Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc, for a brief discussion of both international affairs and the work of the Catholic Church in Romania. Boc himself is Romanian Orthodox. Since the fall of the country's Communist regime, the Byzantine-rite Romanian Catholic Church has continually sought for the restoration of parish properties that were confiscated from Catholic communities and handed over to the local Orthodox churches.

The Pope and the Prince

The last papal audience on Thursday at Castel Gandolfo, was for the Grand Duke Henry of Luxembourg. The prince is in Rome these days for delivery of the Prize Van Thuan Solidarity and Development, in memory of the late Vietnamese Cardinal Van Thuan, former president of Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, who died in 2002. The award was presented to the Grand Duke this year in recognition for not signing the Euthanasia Bill in Luxemburg Parlament.
