"John Paul II: Homage of Benedict XVI for the Beatification"

Vatican
Tomorrow morning the exhibit "John Paul II: Homage of Benedict XVI for the Beatification" will open in the Charlemagne Wing of Bernini's colonnades around St. Peter's Square and remain open until 24 July.
The exhibition, organized by the Governorate of the Vatican City State in collaboration with the Polish Embassy to the Holy See and the Polish Culture and Heritage Ministry, is divided into 15 sections illustrating the life and pontificate of Karol Wojtyla, from his infancy and childhood in Wadowice to the last stage of his life and solemn funeral on 8 April 2005. With a wealth of detail it presents all the moments and aspects of the life of the newly beatified pope.

Bishop Criticizes: War Instead of Dialogue

Libya

Bishop Giovanni Martinelli is the apostolic vicar of Tripoli. He has renewed his condemnation of the bombing of Libya by NATO forces. The bishop told Fides news agency: “On Easter Monday, we witnessed a terrible bombing on Tripoli, but this did not stop the faithful to be present in the church.” He added: “The United Nations have decided to make war and do not allow any form of dialogue as a means of resolving disputes. Everyone wants to continue to pursue the solution of the bombs.”

Chicago: Fr Pfleger Suspended

United States

Yesterday the website of Chicago archdiocese released a letter of Cardinal Francis George to Fr Michael Pfleger, the longtime liberal Pastor of Saint Sabina Catholic Church in Chicago. In the letter, the Cardinal announces that Pfleger was temporally suspended. The reason: The Cardinal had recently suggested that the priest take the position of president at Chicago's Leo High School. Pfleger first agreed but then went public declaring that he would consider leaving the Catholic Church if forced to leave his parish. To this the Cardinal George replies: "If that is truly your attitude, you have already left the Catholic Church". In past years, Pfleger has taken controversial stances supporting, among other things, women’s ordination. He became famous for his work on social justice among black Americans.

The British Bishops Congratulate

UK

The bishops’ conference of England and Wales has offered its congratulations to Prince William and Catherine Middleton ahead of their April 29 wedding. Auxiliary Bishop John Hine of Southwark, chair of the Bishops’ Committee for Marriage and Family Life said: “It is only right that we should strongly support them in prayer since marriage is such an intimate and personal journey and yet we expect our royalty to have a life-long high profile in the media.” Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor will attend the wedding. He noticed that William and Catherine are being married on the feast of St. Catherine of Siena. The Cardinal quoted the saint: “Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire”. And: “You, God, make the heart big – not stingy – so big it has room in its loving charity for everyone.’”

The more important story here is not Fr. Pfleger's public reprimand but the fact that the reprimand was made at all. The recent history of the Catholic Church shows that these kinds of very visible sanctions occur very infrequently even when the individuals involved have damaged the Church far more than this silly priest from the South Side of Chicago,

I don't agree with the following “puff piece” concerning Fr, Pfleger (more community organizer than Roman Catholic priest.). It is clearly an open criticism of the Church with complaints about the lack of “women priests” and a married priesthood to follow. . Nevertheless, the writer does make several thoughtful points.
