Home Sweet Home

Vatican

Pope Benedict XVI has decided not to take a vacation in the Italian Alps this summer, choosing instead to spend all of his vacation time at the summer papal residence on Castel Gandolfo. The Pope, who is approaching his 83rd birthday, indicated that he would prefer to spend his free time resting and reading, without making the effort involved in travel to the mountains. The Pope's decision breaks the pattern that he had established; each summer since his election to the pontificate in 2005 he had spent about 2 weeks in a cabin in the Italian Alps before moving to Castel Gandolfo for the remainder of the summer.

Vatican

"Well, if you’re a hammer, every problem looks like a nail," reasons Anthony Sacramone, writing for First Things online. But the available evidence provides explanations for the scandals, without requiring any theory about Satanic activities.

Unusual Nomination

USA

A parish priest who recently donated a kidney to a parishioner has been named an auxiliary bishop. “It's been a tremendously rewarding experience,” said Msgr. Mark Seitz, one of two newly-appointed Dallas auxiliary bishops, and “a way God has given me to feel closer to the Lord that I serve that didn't only give a kidney, but his whole life.”

Rio de Janeiro's most famous monument, the Christ the Redeemer statue, is undergoing renovation works this year, aimed at preserving it from damage caused by the environment. The Christ the Redeemer was inaugurated in 1931. It was designed by French sculptor Paul Landowski and took nine years to build. It was voted one of the seven modern wonders of the world in 2007. The renovated statue is scheduled to be inaugurated in June 2010.
