The Festival of the Ceri.
It is not easy to "tell the story" of the Festival of the Ceri. It is one of the oldest, if not the oldest Italian folklore display. The festival has always played a fundamental role in the heart of the Eugubina community. An in-depth study of the festival's origins and numerous meanings is something that we are happy to leave to scholars. Its origins are obscure, it is enough to know that there are two basic hypotheses: one religious and one pagan.
The first, which is well-documented and set, out sees the festival as a solemn act of devotion on the part of the Eugubini towards their Bishop Ubaldo Baldassini which started in 1160, the year of his death. Since then, every 15th May, the eve of the day of mourning, the devotional offering to the patron Saint is a fixed appointment for the people of Gubbio who are said to have taken part in a great mystical procession, carrying candles all around the town and up Mount Ingino (where since 11th September 1194 the body of Saint Ubaldo lies, in the church which bears his name). Certainly, the Eugubini dearly loved their important townsman, especially from 1154 onwards, when Gubbio conquered no less than 11 allied cities. The victory seemed miraculous, and was also thanks to the intervention of Bishop Baldassini.
The wax candles, offered by the Arts and Crafts corporations, probably became difficult to transport with the passing of time, and towards the end of the 16th century were substituted by three wooden structures, which were agile and modern. They have been replaced a number of times. They have kept their original form up until today and on the same date; they follow the same route to the same place.
The second theory, which is more suspect and hypothetical, sees the festival as being a continuation of a pagan festival in honour of Ceres, goddess of the harvest, reaching us after having come through the glory of communes, renaissance power, papal domination and the battles of the Risorgimento.

Auf der Piazza Signoria machen sich die Ceraioli bereit für den Lauf auf den Berg Ingino zur Basilika des Heiligen Ubaldo. Der Ceraiolo Piero Viola:
“Wenn es um sechs Uhr heißt: „Die Ceri starten“ – dann starten sie. Dann ist es nicht fünf vor sechs oder zehn nach! Nein. Sie starten um sechs. Wer das versäumt, muss auf das nächste Jahr warten.“
Für die Einwohner Gubbios, die Eugubini, heißt es am 15. Mai schon Tagwache bei Sonnenaufgang. Trommler wecken die Bewohner und verbreiten eine spürbare Spannung über der ganzen Stadt. In aller Frühe fiebert man dem Fest zu Ehren der Schutzpatrone entgegen: Ubaldo, Antonius und Georg.
Ihrer gedenken die Gläubigen auch bei einer Messe in der Kirche San Francesco della Pace. Im Anschluss an den Gottesdienst nehmen die Statuen der Schutzpatrone ihren Platz auf dem jeweiligen Holz-Cero ein. Der Heilige Ubald gilt als der Beschützer Gubbios:
“Der heilige Ubald war der Patron der Maurer und Steinmetze. Das waren wichtige Berufsgruppen bei uns, denn wohin man in Gubbio blickt und die Steine sieht, sie sind zum Großteil von Hand behauen... so etwas wäre heute undenkbar. Aber wenn man sich in Gubbio umschaut, spürt man einfach, was die geleistet haben.“
Der heilige Antonius gilt als Schutzherr der Bauern und Studenten; der Heilige Georg ist der Patron der Handwerker und Kaufleute. Mit ihm fühlt sich Piero Viola am meisten verbunden. Insgesamt 17 Mal in seinem Leben war er Ceri-Träger des Heiligen Georg.
Nach außen hin zeigt sich das auch durch die entsprechende Tracht bei der Ceri-Prozession; Für den Heiligen Georg heißt das dann ein blaues Hemd zu tragen. Besonders stolz ist Piero Viola auf sein allererstes Hemd:
“Das erste Hemd, das ich getragen habe, hat mir mein Nachbar vererbt. Ein Freund meines Vaters. Er lief auch für den heiligen Georg. Natürlich war es das BLAUE Hemd für Georg. Wenn Du das Hemd eines anderen Ceraiolo bekommst fühlst du dich geehrt – es ist schöner, als ein Neues zu kaufen.“
Bei dieser farbenprächtigsten aller umbrischen Prozessionen treten auch die Trommler und Musikanten in ihren traditionellen Uniformen auf: weißes Hemd, schwarze Hose und ganz wichtig: die rote Schärpe.
Der Corsa dei Ceri, also der Lauf an sich, verlangt seinen Trägern einiges ab: Die Holztürme sind nicht nur enorm schwer, durch ihre schlanke, hohe Form können sie auch leicht kippen – ganz zu schweigen von der Steigung der eng gewundenen Bergstraße hinauf zur Basilika Sant´Ubaldo! Auf der gesamten Strecke von etwa vier Kilometern wechseln die Ceraioli daher einander ab. Dass es dabei zu Zwischenfällen kommen kann, ist klar.
“Einmal ist mir genau in dem Teilstück, das ich noch zurücklegen musste, der Hintermann auf den Schuh gestiegen. Ich habe gerade einen anderen abgelöst und hatte noch mindestens 30 Meter mit dem Cero zu laufen. Ich wusste wirklich nicht, wie ich es schaffen sollte. Aber was solls! Ich habe eben ohne Schuh weitergemacht. Solche unvorhergesehenen Ereignisse verleihen dem Lauf einen besonderen Reiz…!“
Ein Außenstehender vermag diese Leidenschaft zu jahrhundertealter Tradition vielleicht nur schwer zu verstehen. Doch für die Menschen in Gubbio ist die Festa dei Ceri der Höhepunkt im ganzen Jahr. Noch nie ist es ausgefallen, und es scheint, als würde diese Tradition auch nie aussterben. Piero Viola: „Gubbio lebt für den 15. Mai!“

Por eso, sus fiestas son muy concurridas por gentes venidas de distintas partes, y más teniendo en cuenta que en ellas se entremezcla lo religioso y lo folklórico.
Las fiestas se conocen como la Corsa de los Ceri, y a poco que sepas un poco de italiano, habrás deducido que se trata de una carrera. En esa carrera lo que se hace es transportan a San Ubaldo y otros dos santos más hasta la Basílica que hay sobre el Monte Ingino, partiendo desde el corazón de la ciudad, la Plaza Grande.
La fiesta comienza con una misa, a cuyo término se trasladan los santos hasta los ceri, unas grandes estructuras de madera que serán sus tronos. Después de la alzada de estos ceri, que podéis ver mejor en la imagen, hay que esperar hasta las seis de la tarde, que es cuando comienzan la carrera propiamente dicha.
Eso sí, de carrera tiene poco en sí, porque no se trata de ganar ni de llegar antes. Al contrario, los ceri siempre entran en el mismo orden, encabezando la procesión, lógicamente, San Ubaldo. Después, ya entrada la noche, la gente regresa a los santos, bajados de sus tronos, hacia la ciudad en una procesión muy bonita, que se realiza a la luz de las velas y al son de canciones tradicionales.

Three teams race through the city’s streets and up the steep slopes of Monte Ingino to the Basilica of St Ubaldo, each carrying a socalled ‘candle’ (ceri), which is actually a 4m-long wooden pillar bearing a statue of one of three ‘rival’ saints (Sts Ubaldo, George and Anthony). Each pillar weighs around 400kg.
The race begins at 6pm with a blessing by the bishop and, after a sprint around the city, begins the climb to the basilica, around 300m above the city. It’s a colourful affair and, like jockeys, each of the ceraiole (candle holders) wears the colours of the saint they carry: yellow for St Ubaldo, blue for St George and black for St Anthony. If you’ve come expecting a fair fight, look away now. St Ubaldo always wins…it’s his day, after all.
Essentials: a fair degree of fitness will be necessary if you’re going to slog up the mountain beside the ceri.
Local attractions: the Basilica di Sant’Ubaldo contains the body of St Ubaldo, and getting here is most of the fun: the ride on the Funivia Colle Eletto is as frightening as the views are beautiful.
