geobeats on Feb 18, 2011 In the quiet village of El Rocio in Andalusia Spain is a newly constructed hermitage built on a sacred location.

The area was deemed an official hermitage site around 1270 by King Alfonso the Wise in honor of the Virgin Mary.

The elaborate cross topping this pristine structure comes from the 17th century and previously belonged to the revered Barrio Santacruz.

The gleaming white structure was constructed in the mid 20th century by two Spanish architects over two decades.

Millions of pilgrims flock to the hermitage on the second day of the Pentecost, a seven week celebration after Easter Sunday.

Most people come from far away to celebrate El Rocio and camp among the crowded streets.

When the annual pilgrimage occurs, the city comes to life with magnificent, ethereal decorations, singing, and dancing.

The Virgin of El Rocío (also known as Madonna of El Rocío or Our Lady of El Rocío, Spanish: Virgen del Rocío, Nuestra Señora del Rocío; also, formerly, Nuestra Señora de los Remedios or Santa María de las Rocinas[1]) is a small carved wooden statue of the Virgin and Child, of which the only carved parts are the face, hands, and the Christ child, which is venerated at the Hermitage of El Rocío (Almonte, Province of Huelva, Spain).[2] The associated annual procession/pilgrimage, known as the Romería de El Rocío, draws roughly a million people each year.[3]
Although the present Hermitage of El Rocío dates only from the second half of the 20th century,[4] there has been a hermitage on this site since the late 13th (or possibly early 14th) century.[5][6][7][8][9] The statue of Our Lady of El Rocío certainly dates back to the first of these hermitages, though its precise date and origin are a matter of some controversy; the statue predates its garments.[9]
The Virgin was declared the patron saint of Almonte 29 June 1653,[10] and received canonical coronation in 1919.[11] Pope John Paul II visited El Rocío and the Virgin 14 June 1993.[12]
