Better off at home. Cardinal O'Malley has barred a talk by the dissident Austrian cleric Father Helmut Schüller in a parish of a Boston suburb. Schüller is the leader of the ultra liberal Austrian Priests’ Initiative that is calling for disobedience in the Church. He is a priest of the archdiocese of Vienna where he has a column in the archdiocesan newspaper. In the recent past, he has also preached retreats to the future deacons of the archdiocese.

Completely deserted. Fr François Mourad, who was murdered by a Western sponsored Islamic terrorist in Syria, died in a Franciscan monastery near Turkey that was under terrorist attack for the past few weeks. At the time of the attack, the monastery sheltered Fr. François, several Franciscan friars, four sisters and ten Christians. When Fr. François tried to defend the nuns and the others, the terrorists shot him to death. The mostly Christian village of the monastery is now completely deserted.

Remarkable victory. The New York State Senate rejected the abortion-related section of a 10-point women’s equality bill. This week, the New York State Catholic Conference called the decision a “remarkable victory for unborn children”. In a public statement, the Catholic conference said that if this element of the bill had passed it would have been “the most radical expansion of abortion since the state legalised it in 1970.”

Bright and joyous. Salvatorian Fr. Stephan Otto Horn, an old confidant of Benedict XVI, saw the retired pope in early June. Horn told the Catholic News Service: "He is 86 now. At that age you are not so strong but he seemed to me to be very fresh. His memory is fresh and his eyes are very bright and joyous." Horn also remarked that Pope Benedict said Pope Francis had been trying to convince him to go to Castel Gandolfo for a vacation while Pope Francis was vacationing there. And: "After the (Feb. 11) resignation it was difficult for him for three weeks, but after those three weeks, his well-being began improving. And he is very interested in everything."

Regards, Lucia and Doina, blessings and good summer.
Sad news of the two priests, but glad the news of Pope Benedict XVI and the New York Senate that slows further opening of abortion .... God cares for the children. We pray for them.
