More Dedication for Prayer

Vatican

On Sunday Pope Benedict XVI celebrated in St. Peter’s Basilica the Mass for the Feast of Pentecost. In his homily he stressed that today “the normal path” to take in order to encounter the Holy Spirit and receive his “fire” is the Church. In order to receive the Holy Spirit Christians, like the disciples of Christ, must be “perseverant and in agreement in prayer”. The Church, he said, “needs to be less ‘anxious’ for action and more dedicated to prayer”.

Pope Receives Obama

Vatican

Pope Benedict XVI will receive US President Barack Obama in early July, around the time of the upcoming Group of Eight (G8) summit in Italy, diplomatic sources said. Italian media reports cited both Vatican and US sources as confirming that preparations for the first-ever meeting between Benedict and Obama were underway. The exact date is not yet certain, with Italian media saying a possible point for an audience would be July 10, after the three-day G8 summit set for July 8 to 10 on the Italian Island La Maddalena.

The Challenge of the Patriarch

Russia

Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia believes that the Church should help people who formally consider themselves Orthodox to become committed believers. "This is our challenge, said the Patriarch answering students' questions at St. Petersburg Ice Palace on Friday. We shall rely on the civil society to meet it. It is important to engage young people and the student community because we are now referring to our country's future. Russia will become a great country only when it learns to match spiritual essence and material nature, temporal things and eternity," Patriarch added.

The Church is More than A Humanitarian Agency

Vatican

Before a sea of at least 30 thousand pilgrims gathered in St. Peters Square for the Regina Coeli on the day of Pentecost, Pope Benedict XVI said: “The Holy Spirit is the Soul of the Church”. Without it the Church would only be “a humanitarian agency”, as it is often regarded by people who cannot see it with the eyes of the faith.
