The Final Hurdle Is Taken

Vatican

The inexplicable healing of an American man came as a result of praying to Cardinal John Henry Newman for a miracle. A panel of theological consulters from the Congregation for the Causes of Saints agreed unanimously upon this. According to the London Daily Telegraph the man was "bent double" by a severe spinal disorder. This recognition of a miracle was the final hurdle that needed to be taken in order to declare Cardinal Newman a blessed. Now the Holy Father can beatify Newman at a date of his choosing.

No Papa Mobile in Nazareth?

Israel

The Israeli secret service does not want Pope Benedict XVI during his trip to the Holy Land to travel in the open "Papa Mobile" through Nazareth, the cathcon.blogspot.com reports. There were indications of an attack planned by Islamist groups, the daily "Haaretz" stated yesterday with reference to secret service sources. It seems that pamphlets were distributed in northern Israel calling for a "disturbance" of the Pope's visit and an attempt on his life. The planned visit to Nazareth on 14 May falls on the same day as the Palestinian day of grieving over the formation of the State of Israel. Therefore, unrest in Arab villages are expected.

Five More Saints

Vatican

Yesterday Pope Benedict XVI canonized five blessed, four Italians and one Portuguese, in a solemn Mass celebrated in the parvis of St Peter’s Basilica, before 30,000 people. They are: Arcangelo Tadini, (1846-1912), founder of the Congregation of Worker Sisters of the Holy House of Nazareth; abbot Bernardo Tolomei (1272-1348), founder of the Congregation of the Blessed Virgin of Monte Oliveto of the Order of Saint Benedict; th Carmelite friar Nuno de Santa Maria Álvares Pereira (1360-1431); Geltrude Comensoli (1847-1903), foundress of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament; and Caterina Volpicelli (1839-1894), foundress of the Congregation of the Servants of the Holy Heart.

Expected in June

Vatican

Caritas in Veritate, the social encyclical by Pope Benedict XVI, will be released for the feast of St. Peter and Paul, June 29. This, Cardinal Renato Martino, the president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, has told reporters. The document is expected to provide a critique of the global economic system and a call for solidarity with the poor. The encyclical was expected to appear earlier. But in a February meeting with priests of the Rome diocese the Pope explained that the worldwide economic crisis had prompted a review of the text.
