Benedict XVI today received the president of Latvia. In the course of the discussions, focus was placed on the good state of the relations between the two states. In the present international economic situation, which has also had heavy repercussions in Latvia, appreciation was expressed for the significant and valuable contribution which the Church offers to Latvian society, not only with its initiatives in the educational and social fields, but also with the presentation of its Social Doctrine. Then the importance of the safeguarding of traditional values and of peaceful coexistence was presented. On the international level, focus was placed on the contribution of Latvia in the promotion of peace and in the field of collaboration with Holy See.
