The Oldest Person Of The World has Died

Sister Cyria Costa has died on Thursday morning, local time, in a hospital on the tiny Caribbean island of Saint Barthelemy. The nun was with 114 years the oldest person of the world. She was born as Eugenie Blanchard in 1896 in Saint-Barthelemy, a French overseas territory. Sister was the sixth of 13 children. She became a nun in 1920. Her grandnephew explained her long live with the fact that she had given her virginity to God. For a couple of years the sisters was unable to communicate. Until the end she did not take any medication.

Closing 21 Church Buildings

The archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis plans to close 21 churches buildings and merge them with other parishes. All but three affected Catholic parishes are appealing the plan. More than 100 written petitions have come in from parishioners and church leaders asking Archbishop John Nienstedt to reconsider the plan, which calls for 21 parishes to merge with 14 receiving parishes. In addition, 33 parishes will join in new "clusters," in which one pastor will lead two or more parishes. The plan was announced last month, will begin in January and take several years to be implemented.

Iraqi Christians Prepare to Leave the Country

After the October 31 massacre at the Syrian Catholic cathedral in Baghdad that killed 58 and wounded 70 people many Iraqi Christians are terrified and prepare to leave the country. “There had never been a massacre of such magnitude, all within a church during the celebration of the Holy Eucharist” commented the Redemptorist superior in Iraq Father Vincent van Vossel. In an interview with the AsiaNews service, Archbishop Louis Sako of Kirkuk said that government officials have an obligation to provide security for Christians, especially at churches on Sunday.

Pope Remembers Dead Cardinals

Yesterday Pope Benedict XVI celebrated the annual Mass for bishops who have died during the past year. He praised their work as pastors and their witness “as Christians, animated by profound faith and by the living desire to conform ourselves to Jesus.” The Vatican schedules a Mass each November for recently deceased prelates. In his homily the pope made special mention of the cardinals who have died in the past year: Peter Seiichi Shirayanagi, Cahal Daly, Armand Razafindratandra, Tomas Spidlik, Paul Mayer, and Luigi Poggi.
