No friend of Obama. On Wednesday the pope named a five-member commission to advise him on the Vatican Bank. One of the members is Mary Ann Glendon – a Harvard Law professor and former US ambassador to the Holy See. Glendon lead the Holy See's delegation to the 1995 Beijing UN Conference on Women. She declined Notre Dame's Laetare Medal in order not to have to share the stage with President Obama at the university's 2009 commencement.

Child-molester recycled as a whistle blower. Patrizio Poggi is a convicted child-molester and former priest of the diocese of Rome. He recently exposed an alleged circle of prostitution of partly underage males destined for monsignors and parish-priests. A former policeman allegedly hired the prostitutes. According to Poggi, the alleged pimp was also involved in a trade where consecrated hosts were sold to Satanist sects. The prosecution is investigating three other individuals none of whom are priests.

Tom Barry, a Catholic in North Cork, Ireland, was given assurances by bishops that he will not be excommunicated despite his support for abortion legislation. Barry wrote about this matter to the papal nuncio Archbishop Charles Brown and to Cardinal Sean Brady. Cardinal Brady told him - quote – “not to be concerned but to outline his and the Church’s views on the matter.” The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith under Cardinal Ratzinger declared that Catholic politicians who voted for the legalization of abortion or supported it should first be informed of the consequences of their immoral actions, and if they persisted they should be denied Holy Communion.

Doctor left “breathless”. Greek doctor Aris Tsigris photographed a very rare moment during a birth. The picture shows a baby still encased inside the amniotic sac after it was delivered via caesarean section in Amarousion, north of Athens. Typically the amniotic sac breaks on its own during birth. The chance of the amniotic sac remaining completely intact after birth is "ultra rare".
