John Paul II never left us alone

John Paul II died three years ago, but never left us alone. Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, Archbishop of Krakow and former secretary of the late Holy Father, stated this at the end of a prayer vigil at his tomb in the Vatican grottoes. The prayer meeting was coordinated by the youth ministry of the Italian Bishops' Conference and the diocese of Rome. Addressing the young people, Cardinal Dziwisz reminded the crowd of that evening in St Peter's Square: "We have come today as we did three years ago" - he said - "to be with him, to pray, to sing, to give thanks." The vigil, with meditations by Cardinal Angelo Comastri, Archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica, was stopped for a moment of silence at 21.37, the time of the death of John Paul II on 2 April 2005.
