While greeting the Chinese Philharmonic Orchestra and the choir of the Shanghai Opera at the end of a concert given May 7 at the Vatican, Benedict XVI said that music expresses universal human feelings that extend beyond individual cultures. The Holy Father expressed his appreciation for the great cultural and musical tradition in China and offered words of support for the hopes of all Chinese people, without forgetting the role that spirituality and religion play in the formation of their culture. "By welcoming you," the Pope explained, "I intend to welcome all of your people, with special regard for your countrymen who share our faith in Jesus."
