Bishop Padovese was attacked in his garden after he had opened the door. The bishop's driver reportedly confessed to the killing. A native of Milan, Italy, Padovese entered the Capuchin order in 1965. He had taught in Rome for years before his appointment in 2004 as apostolic vicar for Anatolia.

A Time to Deepen the Commitment of All Priests

Vatican

The Congregation for Clergy has revealed significant details about the upcoming International Meeting of Priests that will be held in Rome next week. It announced that 9,000 priests are scheduled to attend and that the Pope will proclaim St. Jean Vianney the Patron of all Priests at the closing Mass. The Year for Priests was inaugurated by Pope Benedict XVI on June 19 of last year and will be closed by him with a Mass in St. Peter’s Square on June 11. Last spring, the Pope defined the year-long initiative as a “time to deepen the commitment of all priests to interior renewal for the sake of a more forceful and incisive witness to the Gospel in today’s world.”

Sensationalist Accusations

Germany

The president of Germany’s episcopal conference is under investigation for a 1987 decision to transfer a religious priest who had committed abuse to a parish where he would subsequently abuse another minor. Archbishop Robert Zollitsch of Freiburg was personnel director of the archdiocese when the transfer occurred. Archdiocesan officials have denounced the accusations as sensationalist. They said that the Archbishop was not aware until 2006 that the priest had committed abuse, at which point he alerted Church officials in Switzerland, where the priest was ministering. The archdiocese added that the priest’s religious order (the Cistercians), and not Archbishop Zollitsch, was responsible for the 1987 assignment.

Vatican Features Archbishop Diego Gelmirez

Vatican

This week the Vatican is opening an exhibit featuring, the first Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela, Spain. The archbishop was instrumental in the construction of that city's cathedral and in establishing the traditional pilgrimage to Compostela. Gelmirez was the driving force behind what was "without a doubt the golden age of Compostelan art and culture," the curator of the exhibit argues. The display, set up in the Charlemagne wing of the colonnade in St. Peter's Square, will remain open and free to the public until August 1.
