✍️ So, the answer has just come in from the blog. I quote our blog reader:

"We [English people] tend to use the word ‘grotty’ if we want to describe somthing or somewhere which is below standard, tatty or dirty. I wonder if ‘grotty’ comes from ‘grotto’ or ‘cave.’? I am sure the younger generation probably has a different word for grotty now which is probably only used by the older generation.

"I think grunge clothing would be ideal for exploring caves!"

Great! Thanks for that response!

Over on my blog about Lourdes (immaculataconceptio.wordpress.com), an English reader asked if I was aware that there was another meaning to "grunge".

Over on my blog about Lourdes (immaculataconceptio.wordpress.com), an English reader asked if I was aware that there was another meaning to "grunge".

I'm American, and as far as I know, grunge refers to filth, dirt, horror of all kinds. As kids, if something was like that, we would call it “grungy” with no secondary meanings.

“Grunge” for us also describes a certain kind of music belonging to some members of a generation slightly younger than mine. That’s all I know about grunge.

I hope I haven’t said anything that has a horrific double meaning for non-Americans! Even if that were the case, dissonance and cacophony of spirit analogous to the pigs’ filth in the grotto up to the time of the apparitions is what the Immaculate Conception visits so as to restore peace and tranquility of spirit, asking, of course, that we wash ourselves of our grunginess.

Because of her very purity, Mary saw clearly all the grunginess of men of all time when she saw her beloved Son on the Cross, shedding then, tears of intercession which wash away our grunginess.

Tell me, though, if there is another terrible meaning that I don’t know about. I hope I haven’t insulted our Blessed Mother. Having been a library rat for many years, I’m a bit out of touch with the shades of meaning that a grungy culture can give to various words almost overnight.
