In an interview that appeared in the May 17-18 edition of L’Osservatore Romano, Dr. Renato Buzzonetti reflected on his years as Pope John Paul II’s personal physician. He writes: “The physical pain of the Pope, in the last periods, was intense, but for him there was above all the moral and spiritual suffering of a man on the cross, who accepted all with courage and patience: he never requested sedatives, not even in the final phase.”

A New Rector of the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome

Pope Benedict XVI has named Father, an American Jesuit as the rector of the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome. McCann the current director of the US bishops’ Office to Aid the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. Founded by Pope Benedict XV in 1917, the Pontifical Oriental Institute offers degrees in Eastern Church studies and Eastern canon law. The institute typically enrolls between 300 and 400 students per year.

Over 150,000 people crammed into St. Peter's Square on Sunday, May 16, to show support for Pope Benedict XVI at his midday audience. The enormous crowd gathered in response to a call from the Italian lay organizations for a rally to counteract public attacks against the Holy Father. Pope Benedict thanked the participants who "enthusiastically joined this beautiful and spontaneous demonstration of faith and solidarity." The Pope told the crowd that the Church must not fear public criticism. "The real enemy to be feared and fought is sin.”

Abortion Sister Excommunicated

Sister Margaret McBride has been a Catholic nun and long time administrator at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix. But now, her local Phoenix bishop, Thomas J Olmsted, has excommunicated her. McBride had agreed with a hospital ethics committee that an 11-week-old unborn child had to be aborted in order to allegedly save the life of a mother. Bishop Olmsted stated that the former Sister of Mercy was "automatically excommunicated" because of the action. She has also been demoted in her job.
