A Reminder For the New Cardinals

Vatican

Pope Benedict XVI has admonished the 24 new cardinals not to ask Christ to come down from the cross, but rather to unite themselves faithfully to Him for the redemption of the world. Yesterday during a Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica he gave to each of them a ring with the image of a crucifix emblazoned on it. The image was intended to remind them that their ministry is dependent upon their fidelity to the crucified Christ.

Instrument of Political Theses

Germany

Bishop Richard Williamson of the Society of Saint Pius X recently hired lawyer, Wolfram Nahrath, to conduct his appeal against a €10,000 fine imposed on April, 2010, in Regensburg, Germany, for comments he made in a 2008 Swedish television interview regarding the Holocaust that are illegale in Germany. According the German press Nahrath is affiliated with the so-called neo-Nazi movement in Germany. The Superior general of the Society of St. Pius X Bishop Bernard Fellay in a statement ordered Williamson to refuse the services of Nahrath and to not allow himself to become an instrument of political theses. Fellay concluded the statement as following: “Disobedience to this order would result in Bishop Williamson being expelled from the Society of Saint Pius X.” Williamson’s former lawyer was affiliated with the extremist left-wing Green Party.

The Condoms Are Not A Moral Solution

Internet

Yesterday Damian Thompson wrote on his blog that the Pope did not say condoms are OK. But he continues: “I simply don’t understand how Catholic commenters can maintain that the Pope did not say that condoms may be justified, or permissible, in circumstances where not using them would spread HIV.” Nevertheless, Thompson continues, the Pope made clear that the Church does not regard the Condom as a real or moral solution.

What Will Kiril Say About the Condoms?

Russia

Last week Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill told students and diplomats that the Catholic and Orthodox churches are working together to “defend the traditional concept of family and human values from aggressive secular liberalism.” Kirill spoke at the Russian Foreign Ministry Diplomatic Academy in Moscow. Despite difficulties in theological dialogue, the Moscow Patriarchate has found the Vatican a powerful ally in that battle, the Orthodox leader said. He credited Pope Benedict XVI for creating new opportunities for cooperative work. This was however last week. One may wonder what the Patriarch will say this week after the publication of some of Pope Benedict’s statements regarding the use of condoms.

Two major reports have been published in the past decade on the capability of condoms to impede the transmission of HIV/AIDS. Their conclusions were broadly similar - the use of a latex condom can reduce the risk of HIV/AIDS transmission by 80% to 95% (NIH / WHO). Given that condoms may not be stored in optimum conditions and/or may not be used by their "sell by" date - a 20% risk of contracting HIV/AIDS is a real probability. If I fly on any major airline, I expect a 99.9% safety record, anything less is not good enough. Safety is no accident!

Virtually everyone in our church shares the opinion that a person's moral upbringing and the propagation of Christian values are the best way to avoid the spread of AIDS," the Rev. Vsevolod Chaplin, deputy head of the Moscow Patriarchate's Department for External Church Relations, told Ecumenical News International. He said, " Neither condoms nor medicines can save people who live sinful and senseless lives.
