More than 40 Catholic leaders and theologians have issued an open letter to Catholic candidates Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, warning them “to stop perpetuating ugly racial stereotypes on the campaign trail.”
The signers of the open letter, which was released Friday (Jan. 20), cited Gingrich’s repeated criticisms of Barack Obama as a “food stamp president” who encourages government dependency for the poor, especially for African-Americans.

Beatification Causes Advance for 2 London-Born Nuns

Mother Riccarda Saved Jews From Nazis

LONDON, JAN. 18, 2012 (Zenit.org).- The causes of beatification for two London-born nuns have finished their diocesan stage and are headed to Rome.
The dossier on Mother Riccarda Beauchamp Hambrough (1887-1966), and on Sister Katherine Flanagan (1892-1941) have been sent to the Congregation for Saints' Causes, the Catholic Herald reported Tuesday.
Both nuns were Bridgettine Sisters.
Mother Riccarda served as the director of the order for a time; while at the motherhouse in Rome in 1943, she helped to save the lives of some 60 Jews by hiding them in the convent.
Sister Katherine, meanwhile, was dedicated to opening Bridgettine convents around the world. She was the first prioress of new convents in Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire; Lugano, Switzerland; and Vadstena, Sweden.

Madrid, Spain, Jan 20, 2012 / 06:04 pm (CNA).- The civil rights group Hazteoir.org urged the mayor of Madrid to remove an offensive picture from a photo exhibit showing a Christ-like figure who is naked with a crucifix covering the genital area.
Group spokesperson Ogla Cuquerella said the photo attacks “the religious sentiments” of believers and the “right of Christians to have their symbols be respected.”
According to Europa Press, over 20,000 signatures have been sent to Mayor Ana Botella of Madrid calling for the removal of the image.
The controversial piece is titled “Inferno,” and was taken by photographer Sergio Parra for an exhibit at Madrid’s Spanish Theater. The show opened in the city on Jan. 13 and has already been targeted by numerous critics.
Similar protests occurred when the photo was put on display last year in the city of Merida, where citizens asked governor Jose Antonio Monago to intervene to have it taken down.
Cuquerella voiced hope that Mayor Botella “would be receptive to this civil petition as Jose Antonio Monago was.”
