Sierra Gorda's Franciscan Jewels

The five Franciscan missions of Sierra Gorda were built during the last phase of the conversion to Christianity of the interior of Mexico in the mid-18th century and became an important reference for the continuation of the evangelization of California, Arizona and Texas. The richly decorated church façades are of special interest as they represent an example of the joint creative efforts of the missionaries and the Indios. The rural settlements that grew around the missions have retained their vernacular character.
The site was justified for inscription by UNESCO. The Sierra Gorda Missions exhibit an important interchange of values in the process of evangelization of central and northern Mexico, and the western United States. Also, The five Sierra Gorda missions bear witness to the cultural encounter of the European missions with the nomadic populations of central Mexico, remaining a significant testimony to this second phase of evangelization in North America.

Jalpan, Tancoyol, Landa, Conca and Tilaco are true colonial gems. The Jalpan Mission, hidden among the undergrowth, was the first one founded (April 5th, 1744). It was built in honor of the Apostle James, but today, his figure has been replaced by a clock. Conca, dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, is the smallest one of the five. Its facade stands out since it simulates a grape cluster and it displays a representation of Saint Michael the Archangel as well.
Landa stands out due to the lush of its decorations. Its richly adorned facade displays religious events. Tilaco, on the other hand, includes a church, convent, atrium, posa chapel, open chapel and an artificial cross. Furthermore, its entrance shows the figures of four mermaids. Finally, Tancoyol, which means “the place of the wild date”, possesses a beautiful baroque entrance in honor of Our Lady of Light; her statue disappeared, and that spot remains empty.
