New Facilities for Caritas Baby Hospital.

What originally began as an inspired idea from a Swiss religious is today the Caritas Baby Hospital - a large, well equipped and efficient children's hospital in Bethlehem. Last Saturday, it saw the opening of a specialist clinic and two new facilities at the "School for Mothers", where recovering mothers and children are cared for. The new facilities also offer training so that staff can offer the best possible care and treatment.

With the blessing of Archbishop Fouad Twal, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, who opened the inauguration ceremony, small groups were able to visit parts of the hospital where an average of about 30,000 children are treated annually. Wards with 82 beds are used every year by 4000 children. The statistics make one reflect: the Caritas Baby Hospital in Bethlehem is the only pediatric hospital in all of Palestine, a region that has 500,000 children under 4 years.

In Palestine, where no health care is guaranteed by the State, even though the law requires it, the hospital's founder, Father Ernst Schnydrig, made it his goal to ensure that basic medical care was given to child victims of the Israeli- Palestinian conflict. Today, the Caritas Baby Hospital welcomes Palestinian children from Christian or Muslim families. And it is, for everyone, a place built in memory of Jesus, born in Bethlehem.
