Tensions Among the Contemplative Sisters of Saint-Jean

France. The contemplative sisters of Saint-Jean in France will soon meet in a General Chapter. The comunity is shaken by big internal problems. The conflict erupted when Cardinal Barbarin of Lyon, responsable for the whole comunity of Saint-Jean, replaced the 85 years old superior General, Sister Alix, with the dutch Sister Johanna. The new superior proceded to exchange the longtime novice-mistress, Sister Marthe. But Sister Marthe seems not to be ready to accept her new appointment. In the meantime, the Vatican has namend Mgr. Jean Marie Bonfils as the interim superior of the contemplative sisters. He has confirmed the appointment of the new novice-mistress. But some100 sisters continue to stand by Sister Marthe. Now there is hope, that the General Chapter will bring peace to the community.

Use the Internet Astutely

Vatican

In his message for the Catholic World Day of Communications on Saturday Pope Benedict XVI urged priests to use the internet "astutely" and make the most of opportunities offered by modern technology. The Holy Father said: "Priests are challenged to proclaim the Gospel by employing the latest generation of audio-visual resources – images, videos, animated features, blogs, websites – which, alongside traditional means, can open up broad new vistas for dialogue, evangelisation and catechesis." A the same time the Holy Father warned priests not to strive to become stars of new media. "Priests present in the world of digital communications should be less notable for their media savvy than for their priestly heart," he said.

No Israeli Visas for Helpers

Holy Land

The Interior Ministry of Israel has stopped granting work permits to foreign nationals working in most NGO’s operating in the Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, Haaretz reported. In an apparent overhaul of regulations that have been in place since 1967, the ministry is now granting the NGO employees tourist visas only, which bar them from working. Aid agencies fear that their work should be stopped in areas of the oppressed Palestinians altogether.

Deeply Unecumenical

Vatican

The ecumenical head in the Vatican, Cardinal Walter Kasper, is irritated by Margot Käßmann, the President of the Council of the Protestant Church in Germany. Mrs Käßmann said last week in Berlin, that she expects “nothing” from Pope Benedict in ecumenical terms. The Cardinal commented in Vatican Radio: "I had been of the opinion that such standard mutual condemnations were things of the past. I was wrong and I'm disappointed. "Käßmann’s criticism of the Pope was “deeply unecumenical” and shows “ecumenical ignorance”. Later, Mrs Käßmann explained herself: “We have to say, that theologically we have reached a point who will probably never be brought to one level. For me, this is ok.”
