Sign of the Cross: On May 9 Russia celebrated the 2015 Victory Day Parade that took place in Red Square in Moscow to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the capitulation of Nazi Germany. The military inspection at the beginning of the parade was presided by Minister of Defense, General Sergey Shoigu. Before Shoigu, standing in a car, was driven toward the troops he made the sign of the cross.

A Convert? On Sunday, 83-year-old Cuban President Raul Castro met the Pope for nearly an hour, unusually long for a papal meeting. The visit was private. Castro stopped in Rome on his way back from the Victory Day Parade in Moscow. After the meeting Castro said: "When the pope comes to Cuba in September, I promise to go to all his Masses and I will be happy to do so." And: “I told the Italian prime minister if the pope continues to talk as he does, sooner or later I will start praying again and return to the Catholic Church, and I am not kidding."

Dissolution: In an interview during the archdiocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes, Utrecht Cardinal Willem Eijk, used frightening words about the state of the Church in the Netherlands. Quote: “If we continue like this, the Church will be like a Christmas tree. At some point all the needles will have fallen, and that’s it, the Church quietly passes away.” After Second Vatican Council the Dutch Church was considered the great example for implementing the Council. Now, it is on the verge of dissolution.

Kill the Death Penalty: Sister Helen Prejean, a prominent death penalty abolitionists, may testify as a defense’s witness on behalf of Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Pro-Death-Prosecutors fear, jurors from heavily Catholic Greater Boston could be persuaded by the 76-year-old nun. Judge George O’Toole is expected to decide today whether Sister will be allowed to take the stand. Polls show most Bostonians oppose the death penalty for Tsarnaev. Massachusetts Catholic bishops restated the Church’s opposition last month.

" 3. Not all moral issues have the same moral weight as abortion and euthanasia.
For example, if a Catholic were to be at odds with the Holy Father on the application of capital punishment or on the decision to wage war,
he would not for that reason be considered unworthy to present himself to receive Holy Communion.
While the Church exhorts civil authorities to seek peace, not war, and to exercise discretion and mercy in imposing punishment on criminals, it may still be permissible to take up arms to repel an aggressor or to have recourse to capital punishment.
There may be a legitimate diversity of opinion even among Catholics about waging war and applying the death penalty, but not however with regard to abortion and euthanasia. "

Regarding the "Death Penalty" - Doctrine of the Faith -

CCC: " 2267 Assuming that the guilty party's identity and responsibility have been fully determined,
the traditional teaching of the Church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty,
if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor.
If, however, non-lethal means are sufficient to defend and protect people's safety from the aggressor, authority will limit itself to such means, as these are more in keeping with the concrete conditions of the common good and are more in conformity to the dignity of the human person.
Today, in fact, as a consequence of the possibilities which the state has for effectively preventing crime, by rendering one who has committed an offense incapable of doing harm - without definitely taking away from him the possibility of redeeming himself - the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity "are very rare, if not practically non-existent."
